PLI is administered through the 501c3 arm of SFSU called the University Corporation (UCORP). The University Corporation, San Francisco State (UCorp) was incorporated in 1946 as a not-for-profit public benefit corporation devoted to furthering the educational mission of San Francisco State University. UCorp aims to provide resources to the University as means to enrich the SF State experience for our students, faculty, and staff.
We are a proud park partner with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), a unit of the National Park Service (NPS). A partnership since 1979 with the park via a Special Use Agreement, allows PLI to operate the Fort Miley Challenge Course, located on the northwestern edge of San Francisco known as Lands End. The park provides the 4-acre hillside we use for our ropes course, and we use this rugged outdoor environment to promote personal, social and professional development in urban youth and young adults.
TTFF / Camp Arroyo provides overnight summer camp experiences for families with children who suffer from chronic illness and physical, and mental disabilities. Camp Arroyo is located in Livermore, CA and they have installed their own ropes course. PLI partners with TTFF to deliver their ropes course programs to their summer campers since 2002, offering PLI Staff a unique opportunity to develop skills working with people with special abilities.
PLI has a long history with SFUSD and the Fort Miley Adventure Challenge Course – the original course was built by SFUSD students in 1979. Currently we work closely with School Health Programs and their Mentoring For Success & ARISE programs. PLI provides team build events at the schools, then inviting each school’s mentors and mentees in the program out to our ropes course annually.
GOAL program is an experiential classroom based out of Downtown High School, a continuation school in SFSUD. GOAL students earn credits toward graduation by volunteering to lead programs at the Fort Miley Adventure Challenge Course and among other pursuits. GOAL partnership is essential to PLI’s programs because they are our leadership pool for our YouthLead! program. Almost 40% of our PLI staff are former GOAL students, working at all levels of PLI.
Team is an academic and experiential program offered to high school juniors enrolled in the Tamalipais Union High School District. The program is housed at Tamiscal High. Each year, PLI trains roughly 24 juniors to lead ropes course programs towards earning their high school diploma. The Team program also provides recruitment for future leaders and is an essential long-term partnership that provides a pipeline for Bay Area youth.
